Born in 1950 in Port-Of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago,
an island in the West Indies just off the coast of Venezuela. Played
the ukelele from age of 7 and listened to Latin and calypso music
on radio. Also heard jazz records my father played on his hi-fi
system.
Family emigrated to UK in 1962, and lived in Finchley, North London,
where I went to school. Learned to play guitar from father from
age of 15, and listened to pop music of the 60’s. Joined a
small Caribbean dance combo at 16, playing calypsos and bossa-novas
at weekends.
Went to University of London in 1969, to study Electronics and
Acoustics. Joined London funk band Gonzales part time. Learned to
play in tight rhythm section playing funk, blues and soul. (Motown,
B.B. King, Kool and the Gang ec.). I became influenced by the styles
of guitar players Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale (both of ‘Stuff’).
Left University in 1973, and went on tour with 70’s singer
Linda Lewis who supported Cat Stevens on his world tour in 1974.
From then on I was a full time pro., doing sessions and concerts
with various artists. At about this time I heard George Benson’s
album ‘White Rabbit’, and was influenced by his jazz-funk
style of playing.
Some of the other artists worked for over the years: Elkie Brooks,
Marvin Gaye, George Michael & Wham, Paul Young, Brian Eno and
John Cale, Rick Astley, Mick Taylor Blues Band, Chris Rea. |
